In between assisting and shooting a family a few weeks ago, I got a few moments to look around at the beautiful surroundings that afternoon – one of the final close-to-perfect summer evenings we had.
I will remember that shoot for years to come, if not forever. We took the last photos that this particular family would ever have together; the next day the husband (and father of one) had a tragic climbing accident that ended his life. It was a rude reminder that this land, though scenic and gorgeous, is also wild and dangerous at best.
I’ve heard similar stories from other photographers, but this was a first (and hopefully a last) for me. As heartbreaking as it was to hear the news, there was some sort of comfort in knowing that spent their last day together capturing their family unit in the setting in which they lived and loved.
